Student Minister

STATUS: Full-time, Salaried

HOURS: 40 Hours/week

BENEFITS: $40,000 - $50,000 Salary Range; insurance stipend, cell phone

General Purpose of Position:

To build young disciples for Christ by developing and implementing a comprehensive approach to youth ministry (in the areas of group building, worship, discipleship, mission, and outreach) while serving as a spiritual leader and role model.

Organizational Relationship and Supervision:

The Student Minister reports to the Senior Pastor for spiritual and ministry guidance. The Senior Pastor, in cooperation with the Deacon Body, provides an annual evaluation of the Student Minister’s performance. The Student Minister will be responsible and subject to Smiths Station Baptist Church Policies and Procedure, Bylaws and Constitution, and Personnel Policy Manual.

The Primary Task:

There shall be a comprehensive approach to the development and implementation of the youth ministry at all levels and in all ministry areas of the local church. This comprehensive approach is based on the understanding of the primary task of youth ministry to:

  • Love youth where they are.

  • Encourage youth in developing their relationship to God.

  • Provide them with opportunities for nurture and growth.

  • Challenge them to respond to God's call to serve in their communities and world.

Responsibilities:

  1. Be an advocate for youth and educate the congregation about the hopes, concerns, and needs of youth in the local church and community.

  2. Help plan, develop, and implement all aspects of a balanced youth ministry in the areas of group building, worship, discipleship, mission, and outreach.

  3. Support and guide the work of the Youth Committee in an annual process of evaluating the vision and goals of the youth ministry and directing regular planning sessions.

  4. Mentor youth in developing their leadership skills.

  5. Be aware of resources for developing the youth ministry programming.

  6. Recruit and train adult volunteers who work with youth in all aspects of youth ministry and ensure adequate volunteer support and adult-to-youth ratios.

  7. Be a liaison between the church and other community organizations, people, and resources that relate to youth and youth ministries.

  8. Coordinate Sunday school curriculum for youth (grades7-12) and recruit teachers in partnership with the Associate Pastor and Sunday School Director.

  9. Work in partnership with ministerial staff to effectively reach youth in the community and develop a strategic youth ministry outreach plan.

  10. Keep records of youth participation and manage the youth ministry budget.

  11. Communicate in a timely manner and as effectively as possible using all available resources (email, website, bulletin, newsletter, bulletin boards, social media, etc.). Ensure communication with church staff and leadership, parents, and the entire congregation.

  12. Be available to youth in a variety of ways (i.e., lunch at school, attendance at extracurricular activities, visitation, times of crisis, etc.)

  13. Work in concert with the gifts and talents of other staff members and maintain a teamwork mentality.

  14. Implement and ensure that a Child Protection Policy is observed in all youth ministry settings.

  15. Be available for occasional pastoral work (i.e., visiting hospital, preaching, off-loading/greeting Little Paws Preschoolers, speaking during LPP chapel, etc.)

Qualifications and Aptitudes:

  1. Must be a Christian who has been scripturally baptized and experiences an ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ.

  2. Meet the qualifications set forth in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.

  3. A bachelor's degree in a related field is a minimum requirement. A seminary degree is preferred, but not a necessity. A minimum of two years' experience in a relevant youth ministry is required.

  4. Must have vision and a demonstrated ability to plan, develop, coordinate, manage and implement a youth ministry.

  5. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, conflict management skills, computer skills, social media skills and web-based communication skills.

  6. Must possess a proven ability to work effectively with youth, diverse individuals, and teams of volunteers.

  7. Applicants are preferred to be married and have a healthy relationship with their spouse (and children) that is pleasing to God and sets a good example for others. However, we are seeking God's choice for this position and are willing to consider single applicants as well.

  8. Must align with Baptist Faith & Message 2000.

  9. It is preferred that the Student Minister and his household become members of Smiths Station Baptist Church within a reasonable time.
